We played an Eastern Front-1942
FoW game on Saturday, July 30.
We played a Big Push mission
Each player used 2500 points
each.
We played on a 16x6 table with
rolling terrain ending in the ruined
town of Pisov.
12.5K points of Soviets vs.12.5K
Germans.
The Germans put on a multiple
fortification defense consisting of
barbed wire, minefields and tank
traps as per Hitler's Fire Brigade
briefing manual. The Soviets
deployed multiple sapper units
plus used wide track armor units
(T34s) to knock down the
defensive barriers.
The Germans kept a mobile
Panzer reserve in Pisov to defend
against breakthroughs.
The Soviet players led with Guards
units followed up by conscripts to
avoid being pinned in place.
The game duration was 7.5 hours
with the Russians breaking
through but not having enough
strength to hold Pisov.
Thanks to Hobbytown USA for
allowing us to use their JR
Stalingrad terrain set. Using theirs
and my set,it really gave a ruined
and rubble filled look to the town of
Pisov.
Lessons learned:
- Don't use the long side of
the table. It's a better game
on the short side
- Maintain 3:2 ratio of attacker
to defenders
- Rethink fortifications-FoW
rules allow too much for a
6' wide table....perhaps
could be solved by using
the long sides.
