We played out the Anzio Abcess game on Saturday,
June 18. We played on a 16x6 table with 22,500 points
of Axis(4500 points per player) and 15,000 points of
Allies(3000 points per player) supported by Naval
gunfire provided by the U.S.S. Brooklyn and escorts.
The game has a 6 turn limit. The Germans must take
their assigned objectives within the time limit or the
game goes to the Allies.  This ensures action and no
laying about waiting on the battle to develop.

The Germans start the ball on the right flank.  Clay
Smith advances his Grenadier company and runs into
massed U.S. artillery fire.  His advance is blunted. No
counter attack was mounted by the Allies.  They held
their ground.

German Panzergrenadier companies begin their assault
by rolling up the road to Anzio.  Again, Allied artillery
slowed the advance but the Britsh Motor Company
holding the approach was destroyed by HMG and
assaulting Tigers.  U.S. M-10s beamed down and made
short work of one Tiger and bailed another.  The British
assaulted again and destroyed the other marauding
Tiger. Follow on units of Steve's command were slowed
and pinned by massed artillery coming from both U.S.,
British and Naval forces.

Bob and Michael had better luck punching through the
Allied defenses.  At one point Michael assaulted a
ruined abbey looking very similar to Hougoumont.  The
British repulsed his assault and Bob's massed Panzer
company made the most headway but again were
slowed and repeatedly pinned by artillery and Naval
gunfire.

Jacob on the left flank made short work of the British
forces; causing the Allied commanders to shift the
majority of their armor to counter the pressure.  This
softened the Allied center but was not exploited by the
German commanders.

The game was called after 6 turns.  The Allies had
possession of all objectives.  The German plan to push
the Allies into the sea was an abject failure.

The game played historically with a historical result.

Great game for all concerned!
